Cal State Monterey Bay and Cal State San Bernardino matched the CCAA Baseball Tournament record with 31 combined runs, and the Yotes needed every one of them as they edged the Otters 16-15 on Deshawn Johnson's two-out, walk-off single.
The victory forced the winner-take-all 'If Necessary Game' to determine who will receive the CCAA's automatic bid to regionals and be crowned the CCAA Tournament Champions.
Johnson's RBI single completed a 3-for-5, 4-RBI game for the senior second baseman, who was one of the seven starters to record a multi-hit game. Jason Shedlock and
Daryl Ruiz each had three hits and three RBI as the top three hitters in the Yotes lineup combined to go 9-for-15 with 10 RBI and seven runs scored.
CSUSB took the early lead in this back-and-forth game with a four-run first. They went up 7-3 after three innings, and then the Otters started to chip away at the lead.
Robbie Treto's home run made it 8-4 and RBI singles by
Chase Lindemann and
Drew Williams cut the deficit to two (8-6).
The Otters would take their first lead of the game with a four-run sixth inning. The first two runs scored on a dropped infield fly and a wild pitch before Lindemann homered to deep right field to give CSUMB its first lead of the game at 10-8. After a shutdown inning by the bullpen, the Otters added three more runs in the top of the eighth to take a five-run lead (15-10).
This time it was the Yotes' turn to battle back. Two singles and an error loaded the bases with no outs.
Daryl Ruiz then singled in two before
Giovanni Del Negro scored on a wild pitch to make it 15-13. An RBI double and a RBI groundout on the next two batters tied the game at 15-15.
In the ninth,
Derek Bogh doubled with one out and moved to third on a ground ball to shortstop. Johnson fouled off the first pitch he saw before lining a ball over shortstop to plate Bogh with the winning run.
Oscar Rauda (2-0) earned the win in relief.
