For a CCAA-leading fourth time in 2023, Cal State LA’s Leon Tafirenyika has been selected as the CCAA Track Athlete of the Week. (Apr. 17-23)

Tafirenyika set a meet record at the Chris Rinne Twilight (hosted by UC Riverside) while winning the 400-meter with a time of 46.45. He shattered the previous meet record by over 1.5 seconds (47.99 by Marcell Espinoza, Cal State Fullerton). The time was a season-best for the junior, and it moved him to fourth on the 2023 NCAA Div. II Performance List.

Tafirenyika also anchored the 4x400m relay team to a season's best time of 3:12.45. He teamed up with Shannon Turner, Jesus Nichol II, and Clifton Johnson to register the 17th-fastest time in the country.

Tafirenyika previously won CCAA weekly honors on Feb. 28, Mar. 7, and Mar. 28. He also collected two CCAA Track Athlete of the Week honors during the 2022 campaign.

Members of the Cal State LA men’s track & field team will compete this weekend at the Steve Scott Invitational in Irvine. This will be the Golden Eagles' final meet before the CCAA Championships on May 4-6 at Cal State San Marcos.
