Cal State San Marcos distance runner Luz Mercado has been selected as Women’s Track Athlete of the Week, for the week of April 3-9.
Mercado won the 800-meter run at the Triton Invitational at UC San Diego by posting a personal best time of 2:11.95, which is an NCAA provisional qualifying time. The sophomore from Chula Vista leads the CCAA and is the only student-athlete in the conference to have a provisional qualifying time in the 800.
At UCSD, Mercado won the event in a strong field of 66 runners, including a number of Division I athletes. Her sister Ana came in second in 2:12.96. Her time ranks 20th best in Division II and is now the fifth fastest time in CSUSM program history.
The Cougars have a busy week ahead with Mt. SAC Relays (April 12-15), the Bryan Clay Invitational (April 13-15) and the Beach Invitational (April 14-15).
