Cal State LA's Leon Tafirenyika earns back-to-back CCAA Track Athlete of the Week awards

For the second consecutive week, Cal State LA's Leon Tafirenyika has been selected as the CCAA Track Athlete of the Week. (Feb. 27-Mar. 5)

The junior from Harare, Zimbabwe, took over first place on the NCAA Division II Performance List in the 400-meter with his time of 48.30 at the Kim Duyst Invitational. His mark is nearly a half-second faster than second place. 

Tafirenyika was an All-American in the 400m last season. He placed seventh at the national meet to become Cal State LA's first All-American in the men's 400m since 1989 (Edward O'Neal).

Tafirenyika also teamed up with Clifton Johnson, Shannon Turner, and Jesus Nichol II to place third in the 4x400m relay with a time of 3:21.34. The group placed third at the Kim Duyst Invitational, and their time ranks 11th in the country. 

The Golden Eagles will be in action again this week at the Occidental Distance Carnival & Spring Break Classic (Mar. 11).
