For the third time this season, Cal State LA’s Leon Tafirenyika has been selected as the CCAA Track Athlete of the Week. (Mar. 20-26)

The junior from Harare, Zimbabwe, had a great showing at the Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner Kersee Invitational hosted by UCLA. Against NCAA Division I competition, Tafirenyika delivered fifth-place finishes in the 200 and 400-meters and helped the Golden Eagles place third in the 4x100m relay.

Tafirenyika posted the third-fastest mark in Div. II with an NCAA Provisional Qualifying time of 46.76 in the 400m. He also helped the relay team set a season-best time of 41.43, running the anchor leg and passing multiple people down the final stretch to take the team from last to a third-place finish.

His time of 21.34 in the 200m was his second-fastest this season. At the previous meet, he earned an NCAA Provisional Qualifying mark with a time of 21.19.

This gives the Golden Eagles four of the six CCAA Track Athlete of the Week awards in 2023. Qwintin Workman won last week, and Tafirenyika collected the honor in back-to-back weeks earlier in the season. (Feb. 28 & Mar. 14)

The next meet on the schedule for the Cal State LA track & field teams will be the Vince O’Boyle Track & Field Classic at UC Irvine on Mar. 31 and Apr. 1.
