Alexis Garnica of Stanislaus State made a huge debut in the throwing ring as she captured the CCAA Women’s Field Athlete of the Week award.
A freshman from Clovis, Garnica not only won the hammer throw event at the Sunbird Invitational at Fresno Pacific, she picked up a couple of qualifying marks along the way. Her toss of 54.89 meters, or 180 feet-1 inch, is a NCAA provisional qualifier. It also meets the USATF U20 standard mark, which provides her a chance to compete in the USATF Outdoor Championships in Oregon this summer.
Garnica’s hammer throw result in her first collegiate outdoor track meet also put her at No. 6 in Stan State’s all-time list.
Saturday at FPU, Garnica also came in third in the shot put (10.29m) and fourth in the discus throw (3.52m).
The Stanislaus State Track & Field team will return to action at its annual home meet at the Kim Duyst Invitational on March 3-4.
