Deadly from Deep: Cal State LA’s Shane Bell named the CCAA Player of the Week

For the second time in four weeks, Cal State LA’s Shane Bell has been named the CCAA Men’s Basketball Player of the Week. (Dec. 4-10) 

Bell averaged 20.5 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 6.0 assists to lead Cal State LA to a pair of home wins, and the Golden Eagles are now tied for third in the CCAA standings at 3-1. He went 10-of-12 on 3-pointers (.833 percent) and finished the week shooting 62 percent from the field (13-of-21). 

The 6-5 guard opened the week with a 12-point, eight-assist, five-rebound effort in a 20-point win over Cal State Monterey Bay on Thursday. 

On Saturday, Bell put up a CCAA season-high 29 points and tied a program record going 8-for-10 on 3-pointers. After going down 47-43 in the first half against Stanislaus State, he put up 20 points in the second half to help secure a victory for Cal State LA. 

The Hercules, Calif., native is now fourth in the conference in scoring (14.8) and leads the CCAA with 5.1 assists per game. His 2.6 assist-to-turnover ratio also paces the league and is double the second-place mark. 

Bell is the first Golden Eagle to earn multiple CCAA Player of the Week honors in the same season since Vincent Camper won three in 2007-08. 

Cal State LA is in finals week and will not play any games this week. Before starting their Christmas break, they will travel to Fresno Pacific for a non-conference game on Tuesday, Dec. 19. The Golden Eagles will resume conference play on Dec. 30 against Cal State Dominguez Hills.
