POMONA, Calif. - Cal Poly Pomona scored early and often to secure its victory in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Super-Region 4. The Broncos put up four goals in the first 27 minutes and maintained the game for a 4-1 win over fellow CCAA member Cal State Monterey Bay. (Nov. 18)

Paul Roger Henschke registered his 10th goal of the season in the sixth minute after receiving a perfect through-ball by Woody Angell to give the Broncos the early lead.

CCAA Defensive Player of the Year, Cesar Ruvalcaba, extended the lead to 3-0 with two goals in a six-minute span. He put CPP up 2-0 on a header off Mike Moser's corner kick in the 14th minute when he came to the far side of the scrum and stuck it just inside the near post. His third came in the 20th minute on a free kick from the right side when Moser and Max Laguna pulled off a little trickery on the kick before finding Ruvalcaba cutting in front of the pack.

The fourth goal also came on a free play. After the corner kick was headed away, Melvin Leon collected the ball at the top left of the box. He did not hesitate as he sent in a shot that snuck through a forest of legs to find the goal.

Cal State Monterey Bay cut into the lead with Hugo Vargas-Rios' penalty kick goal in the 31st minute to make it 4-1, but unfortunately for the Otters, that would also be the final score.

Jack Blickenstaff had three saves for Cal State Monterey Bay, and CJ Walker made a stop for Cal Poly Pomona.

Cal Poly Pomona will advance to the Super-Region 4 semifinals to face Cal State LA. The game is scheduled for Nov. 30, but the site is yet to be determined.
