Cal State San Marcos fell to Concordia 1-0 in double overtime of the 4/5 matchup at the 2023 NCAA Women's Soccer West Regional.
The loss was the first for the Cougars in nearly two months (Sept. 20). It snapped a 14-match unbeaten streak that saw CSUSM go from tying for sixth in the preseason coaches poll to placing second in the regular season and receiving a bye in the CCAA Tournament.
After regulation and the first overtime were not enough time to decide a winner, the match went to a second extra period, and that is when Concordia got the break it had been looking for all match.
Hailey Havican found
Riley Walkington in space on the right side. Walkington beat her defender and got to her spot just outside the box. The keeper tried to cut down the angle, but it was too late as Walkington's shot went just past her outstretched arms and into the net for a goal.
The Cougars tried desperately to find the equalizer in the last seven minutes but could not get any shots past Concordia's keeper Riley Urquiza. She finished with two saves. CSUSM's
Allison Marcure had five.
This ends the season for Cal State San Marcos at 11-3-6 (6-0-5 CCAA). Concordia will play site host Point Loma on Saturday, Oct. 18, at 1 p.m., with a spot in the regional championship on the line.
