SEATTLE - No matter what they tried, Simon Fraser could not find a way to get past the wall that was Taesja Paopao in the net. The 2023 CCAA Goalkeeper of the Year made nine saves and stopped all four shots she faced in the shootout to help Cal State LA advance on penalty kicks, 2-0. (Nov. 16)
The match began with both teams getting plenty of looks on goal in the first 45 minutes, but as the game went along, it settled into a defense-centered match, which resulted in 110 minutes of scoreless soccer. When the buzzer sounded, the teams prepared to go to a shootout for the first time this season.
Simon Fraser's first shootout attempt hit the crossbar. Cal State LA went up 1-0 after Amanda Maceda made her shot. Paopao then stopped on to the low right of the goal and Shelby Melin extended the lead to 2-0. Another stop by Paopao gave the Golden Eagles a chance to win it on their third attempt. However, the shot sailed high, leaving the door open for a Red Leafs' comeback.
With one shootout attempt, they would be right back in the match, but Paopao made sure it would not happen. She saved three consecutive attempts to the same lower right quadrant, giving her three stops on the four shots she faced.
Cal State LA was outshot in the match 21-13, including 9-4 on shots on goal. Sarah Loewen played every minute in goal for Simon Fraser and recorded four saves.
The Golden Eagles will advance to the semifinals of the NCAA West Regional. They will face the No. 2 seed and site host, Seattle Pacific, on Saturday, Nov. 18 at 1 p.m.
