CSUSM’s Ana Mercado picks up her second Track Athlete of the Week award

Ana Mercado broke a Cal State San Marcos record in the 800-meter run, earning her this week’s Women’s Track Athlete of the Week, for the week of April 11-17.

Mercado posted a NCAA Championship provisional qualifying time of 2:09.68 at the Bryan Clay Invitational, surpassing CSUSM’s previous record of 2:11.25 set by Charlotte Kuzminsky in 2016.

The time recorded by the freshman from Chula Vista was 1.60 seconds faster than her previous personal best. Mercado’s new time is now the fastest in the CCAA and is third best in the West Region. She now ranks 11th in Division II.

Mercado snagged the Track Athlete of the Week award for March 7-13 after running the then-fastest Division II time in the 800-meter run in 2:11.33.

CSUSM will be at the Chris Rinne Twilight at UC Riverside Friday afternoon.
