Cal State LA's Leon Tafirenyika named CCAA Track Athlete of the Week Apr 19, 2022 Share: Complete list of past winners >>> Cal State LA’s Leon Tafirenyika has been selected as the CCAA Track Athlete of the Week after becoming the first CCAA student-athlete to post an NCAA Provisional Qualifying mark in 400m this season. The freshman from Harare, Zimbabwe, began the week by winning the 400m at the Cal State LA Twilight with a time of 48.71. He then dropped almost 1.5 seconds off that time just a day later at Mt SAC Relays when he posted a personal-best time of 47.24. That time was the fastest in the CCAA this season and the ninth-fastest in NCAA Division II. Tafirenyika also helped the 4x400m relay team win the Cal State LA Twilight and place ninth in the field at the Mt. SAC Relays with a season-best time of 3:16.18 (second in CCAA). Cal State LA will compete in the Chris Rinne Twilight this Friday (April 22) in their final meet before the CCAA Championships, held May 5-7 at San Francisco State.
