The CCAA Men's Golf coaches selected Cal State San Marcos Matthew Pennington as the 2021-22 CCAA Player of the Year. Cal State Monterey Bay's Jack Deaner and Simon Bjorken were named the CCAA Freshman and Newcomer of the Year, respectively. Cal State San Bernardino's Kyle Emerson was voted the CCAA Coach of the Year award.
Matthew Pennington excelled throughout his first full season with the Cougars. The redshirt freshman posted five top 10 finishes, including three tournament wins. He captured the 2022 CCAA Men's Golf individual championship by four strokes with a 2-under 214. He was the only student-athlete to shoot under par at the Yoche Dehe Golf Course. Pennington is averaging under par with a 71.6 scoring average to rank No. 1 in the West Region. He posted scores at or below par in 13 of his 25 rounds, including a season-low 67 at the Otter Invitational and the CCAA Championships. Pennington's efforts allowed Cal State San Marcos to secure three tournaments victories throughout the season.
In his first season with the Otters,
Jack Deaner stepped into a starting spot and played in all nine tournaments en route to earning the Otters' first CCAA Freshman of the Year award since 2017. Deaner had a 74.16 stroke average and climbed to No. 19 in the regional rankings. He posted 12 rounds at or below par, including the final two rounds of the CCAA Championships, as he climbed into a tie for fifth place and earned an all-tournament selection.
Simon Bjorken was named the CCAA Newcomer of the Year. The Hudiksval, Sweden native, finished in the top 10 in five of his nine tournaments, including tying for second at the CCAA Men's Golf Championship. He posted 10 birdies in the second round of the CCAA Championships and finished with an 8-under 64. It was the second-lowest round in the CCAA Championships since 2005. Bjorken is the No. 5 ranked player in the region, and he averaged 73.16 strokes per round.
Cal State San Bernardino's
Kyle Emerson was voted the CCAA Coach of the Year for the first time in his career and is the first honoree in program history. The sixth-year head coach helped lead the Yotes to a tournament title at the Otter Invitational and as well as two second-place and two third-place finishes. Mark Williams and Brian Nielsen earned CCAA Golfer of the Week awards with Williams being all-conference.
Pennington and Bjorken collected All-CCAA honors for the first times in their careers. They were joined on the all-conference team by Chico State's
Chris Colla and
Dakota Ochoa. Colla was an honorable mention selection in 2017-18 and a first team selection in 2019-20. Ochoa picked up All-CCAA honors as a freshman after placing fourth at the CCAA Championship.
Thomas Jenkins and
Griffin Pace gave Sonoma State a pair of All-CCAA selections. The duo helped lead the Seawolves to their first conference championship since 2009. It was the first career All-CCAA selection for both student-athletes.
Stanislaus State's
Brad Sparrer earned his second consecutive all-conference award after ranking fourth in the region. His teammate and 2017-18 CCAA Freshman of the Year,
Michael Jura III, also picked up All-CCAA honors after earning four top 10 finishes and shooting eight rounds under par.
Mark Williams represented Cal State San Bernardino on the All-CAA team. He went even-par or better in 13 of his 28 rounds including when he shot 7-under (209) at the Palm Valley Classic.
Seung Ho Yoon completed the 10-person all-conference team as he became the first Cal State Dominguez Hills golfer to earn All-CCAA honors since 2010.
Seven CCAA teams are currently listed in the top 10 of the NCAA regional rankings. Ten teams will be selected to compete in the regional on May 4-7 at the Pueblo Country Club in Pueblo, Colorado.
