Chico State's Alani Nguyen slugs her way to Player of the Week

After leading Chico State to a road sweep at Cal Poly Humboldt, Alani Nguyen has been voted the CCAA Player of the Week for the week of Feb. 28-March 6. 

Whether she was crossing the plate herself or driving in teammates, Nguyen was a run-producing machine throughout the series. All told, the Southern California native batted .471 (8-for-17), hit safely in all four games, collected three extra-base hits, scored six times, and drove in seven runs while posting a .500 on-base percentage and .765 slugging percentage. 

Nguyen began Friday’s series-opening doubleheader with an RBI single in Chico State’s 4-0 victory, then in game two ripped two doubles, scored twice, and knocked in a pair as the Wildcats shut out the Lumberjacks7-0. 

Saturday, Nguyen hit her first home run of the season, scored twice, and racked up three RBI in the Wildcats’ 9-7 win, then wrapped up the twin bill and the series with a 3-for-4 performance in the nightcap, scoring twice and driving in two more as Chico State downed the ’Jacks 17-5.

Chico State (18-4) is tied with Cal State San Marcos for first place in the CCAA standings at 10-2. The Wildcats will be on the road again this week as they travel to San Francisco State for a four-game series (March 11-12).
