2021-22 All-CCAA Men's Basketball Team >>>
Cal State San Bernardino men's basketball earned three of the five CCAA major individual awards, but Chico State's
Malik Duffy came away as the 2021-22 CCAA Player of the Year.
Brandon Knapper, who finished runner-up in the CCAA Player of Year voting, was named the CCAA Newcomer of the Year. His teammate,
Darius Lubom, collected CCAA Defensive Player of the Year honors, and
Andy Newman was selected as the Coach of the Year. Cal Poly Pomona's
Dane Erikstrup was voted the CCAA Freshman of the Year.
Malik Duffy helped power Chico State to a 19-3 record (15-3 CCAA) and to the No. 2 seed in the CCAA Men's Basketball Tournament. The senior forward from Sacramento ranks fifth in the conference in scoring (15.9 ppg), tied for sixth in rebounding (7.6), and third in field goal percentage (.482). He led the league with a .435 shooting percentage from behind the arc and was fourth in free throw percentage (.838). Duffy scored in double figures in all but one game. He reached the 20-point plateau six times, scoring a season-best 27 points against Cal State Dominguez Hills on 11-of-16 shooting. He finished the regular season with six double-doubles.
Brandon Knapper was CCAA's leading scorer at 20.2 points per game. He posted 20 or more points in half of the Yotes games (12 of 24), including three games where he went over 30 points. The Eastern Kentucky transfer scored a season-high 38 points in the season finale to wrap up the regular-season title and the No. 1 seed for Cal State San Bernardino. Knapper was a three-time CCAA Player of the Week, and he is pacing the CCAA in made 3-pointers per game (3.24).
Darius Lubom not only runs the point for the conference's top-scoring team; he is also their defensive stopper. Lubom is fourth in the CCAA in total steals (36), but it is his work on the opposing team's top guard that caught the attention of the league's other coaches. Lubom plays more minutes than any other Yotes student-athlete (fourth in CCAA) and he has helped them hold opponents to a .408 shooting percentage (fifth CCAA). Lubom also ranks sixth in assist to turnover ratio (1.81), and he is second in assists per game (4.7).
Dane Erikstrup was the second-leading scorer for Cal Poly Pomona as a freshman. He averaged 11.9 points and shot .475 percent from the field and .424 percent from 3-point range. He also averaged 5.2 rebounds and led the Broncos with a .796 free throw percentage. The Portland native scored in double figures in 10 of 21 games. He registered a season-best 27 points against Cal Poly Humboldt when he went 10-of-12 from the field and 5-of-7 from behind the arc.
Andy Newman seized his first CCAA Coach of the Year honor in his fourth season with Cal State San Bernardino. Newman led the Yotes to a 22-2 record (16-2 CCAA) and the program's first regular-season title since 2013-14. They began the season at 6-0 to get into the national rankings, where they climbed into the top 5. Coach Newman's squad lead the CCAA in scoring by over seven points per game. The Yotes are also the CCAA's top shooting team (.483) and its best rebounding team (43.3). Cal State San Bernardino is second in the country with a plus-10.2 rebounding margin and 12th in turnovers forced per game (14.7).
Malik Duffy was joined on the All-CCAA first team by his teammates
Isaiah Brooks and
Kevin Warren as Chico State led the way with three first team selections. Cal State San Bernardino led the conference with five selections combined.
The CCAA Men's Basketball Tournament will begin on Thursday, March 3, at 5:30 p.m. when No. 3 seed Cal State San Marcos takes on No. 6 seed Cal Poly Pomona.
