Right when things looked to be at their worst for Sonoma State after giving up a goal in overtime, CCAA Defensive Player of the Year Julia Pritchard and CCAA Offensive Player of the Year Lexi Zandonella-Arasa stepped up with game-changing plays in the second overtime to lift the top-seeded Seawolves to a 2-1 win over No. 4 Chico State in the semifinals of the 2022 CCAA Women's Soccer Tournament.
The match was tied after 90 minutes after each team had a goal waved off in the first half. Chico State earned a foul in the box for rough play halfway through the first overtime period. Goalkeeper Emma Hofmann stepped up and made the penalty kick for the 1-0 lead. It seemed all momentum had swung to the Wildcats' side and they might pull the upset, but everything changed for the Seawolves after the overtime intermission.
Sonoma State wasted no time going on the attack as they started with the ball in the final overtime period. They push forward and found Pritchard in the middle of the field with a defender on her back. Without hesitation, she fired a high shot that arched over the goalkeeper's outstretched hand and right under the crossbar for the equalizer.
Less than two minutes later, the Seawolves would get another scoring opportunity when they drew a foul in the box, setting up a penalty kick of their own. Zandonella-Arasa stepped up to take the kick but did not strike it how she wanted as it sailed toward the center of the goal. However, she put enough power behind it and got it past the outstretched arms of the keeper for her 14th goal of the season.
The Wildcats outshot the Seawolves 18-9, including 6-2 in shots on goal.
Sonoma State will advance to the finals of the CCAA Women's Soccer Tournament for the fifth straight season.
