Sonoma State's season ends in the regional semifinals

The No. 4 seed, Sonoma State, fell 2-1 to the No. 1 seed, Seattle Pacific, in the NCAA Women's Soccer West Regional to end their playoff run. (Nov. 20)
 
Seattle Pacific scored the first goal of the match in the 24th minute and it never gave up its lea. Claire Neder was able to find Chloe Gellhaus hanging around the mouth of the goal with a perfect pass that Gellhaus headed into the net for the 1-0 advantage.  
 
The score remained at 1-0 through halftime, but the Falcons quickly tacked on an insurance goal when the team returned to the field. Makena Rietz notched her 13th score of the season in the 50th minute when she finished a cross from Sophie Beadle.
 
Lexi Zandonella-Arasa put Sonoma State on the board and cut the lead in half with a goal in the 74th minute. Following a giveaway near midfield, Zandonella-Arasa found an open shot from 24 yards away. She smashed the long shot perfectly to avoid the goalkeeper as the ball found the top corner of the net.
 
Phoebe Barnes had three saves for the Seawolves and Riley Travis made six for the Falcons.
 
Sonoma State completes the 2021 season at 15-6-0. The Seawolves were the 2021 CCAA regular season champions and this was their sixth consecutive appearance in the NCAA West Regional.
 
Seattle Pacific will advance to the NCAA West Regional Championship match. It will face the No. 2 seed, Western Washington, on Thursday, Dec. 4 for the regional championship.
