Offensive outburst sends Sonoma into the semis

Box score

Sonoma State is advancing to the NCAA Women's Soccer West Regional semifinals after a dominant 5-1 win over the No. 5 seed, Hawaii Hilo. (Nov. 18)

Alyssa Silva gave the Seawolves a lead in the 16th minute when she headed in an assist from Renee Ketner and Victoria Chavez. Chavez added a goal of her own 11 minutes later to extend Sonoma State's lead to 2-0.

In the second half, as the Vulcans became desperate to even the match, the Seawolves took advantage of some holes in their defense to tack on three more goals. Silva notched her second goal of the match, and fifth of the season, in the 64th minute off an assist from the 2021 CCAA Defensive Player of the Year, Julia Pritchard.

Within the next 15 minutes, Drew Swanson and Kaci Holliday would each post their first goals of the season on unassisted plays as the Seawolves extended their lead to 5-0. Hawaii Hilo broke up the shutout in the 79th minute, but that is all the Vulcans would get.

Phoebe Barnes had three saves to help Sonoma's defensive effort that allowed just four shots on goal all match.

Sonoma State will advance to the semifinals where it will face the No. 1 seed, Seattle Pacific on Saturday, Nov. 20 at 2 p.m.
