Cal State East Bay's magical season ends in the regionals

Box score

The magically run of Cal State East Bay women's soccer team came to an end in the NCAA West Regional, but it took a 10-round shootout to finally put the Pioneers away.

The No. 6 seed Pioneers faced off with the No. 3 seed Point Loma in Bellingham, Wash. Cal State East Bay struck first with a goal in the ninth minute. Riley Spitzer took a shot from 30 yards out, and when the defender tried to stop it through the rain and wind, she deflected the shot, and it snuck past the keeper for the early lead.

Point Loma would even the game shortly into the second half on a goal by Hailey Clifford, and the score would remain locked at 1-1 through regulation and both overtime periods. The match then turned to a shootout with a spot in the NCAA Regional semifinals on the line.

Point Loma missed its very first attempt opening the door for the Pioneers, but they missed their third shot, and it was tied 4-4 after five rounds. Both teams made their shots in the sixth round before each missed in the seventh. The same pattern played out in the eighth and ninth rounds and the match was tied 7-7 going into the 10th round.

PLNU went first and put theirs into the net for the lead. Cal State East Bay's student-athlete decided to go with a shot into the top-middle of the net on her attempt, but the Point Loma goalkeeper reacted just enough to get a finger on it and direct it into the crossbar for a miss.

Jordan Smith had an incredible 15 saves for the Pioneers in the loss. The 15 saves are the most for any keeper in the CCAA this season, four more than second place.

This marked the fourth straight playoff match that has come down to the final minutes for Cal State East Bay. The Pioneers opened the CCAA Tournament with a shootout victory over Stanislaus State and 2021 CCAA Goalkeeper of the Year, Amanda Leal. They then won in double overtime over the No. 2 seed, Chico State, before scoring two second-half goals to knock off the No. 1 seed, Sonoma State, with a comeback victory. This was all in Cal State East Bay's first CCAA Tournament appearance.

Cal State East Bay ends its season at 11-5-5. The 11 wins are the most for the program since 2007.
