Headlined by decorated senior Elis Svard of Cal State Monterey Bay, the 2019-20 CCAA Men’s Golf award winners have been selected. The All-CCAA Team and all award recipients were voted on by the league’s nine head coaches, despite the shortened season.
Hailing from Sodertalje, Sweden, Svard has earned his second Player of the Year selection, also winning the award in 2017-18 after claiming the CCAA Individual Championship as a sophomore. His third major conference distinction of his collegiate career as an Otter, Svard was CCAA Freshman of the Year in 2016-17. Historically, Svard is the lone Cal State Monterey Bay golfer to win the conference’s top spot, and is one of three men to see their name called in multiple seasons. He can now claim status as a three-time All-CCAA first-team selection as well.
As the only CCAA golfer to average under-par or better on the season, Svard led the conference in scoring average with a mark of 71.18 strokes per round. Finishing in the individual top-10 in all six events played including a first-place finish, Svard stands in ninth in the Golfstat Division II individual rankings. One highlight of the season came at the Dennis Rose Invitational, where Svard fired a second-round 66 to race to the top of the leaderboard and outpace fellow All-CCAA golfer Blake Bourelle by five strokes for the victory.
Chico State junior Myoung Kim picked up Newcomer of the Year acclaim, and stands as the seventh Chico State man to dazzle in his opening season as a Wildcat. Hailing from Seoul, South Korea, the transfer from Orange Coast Community College was hot out of the gates, and stayed that way throughout the campaign.
Kim closed with a final-round 64 at the Western Washington Invitational to leap up the leaderboard to third individually in his second Division II event. The 64 is the lowest round for a Wildcat since 2012 and he is one of three Chico State golfers to go that low since the start of the century. All told, Kim placed in the top-10 in five of six events, and averaged 73.17 strokes per round. Kim was also named to the All-CCAA Team, and is joined by senior teammate Chris Colla.
Freshman of the Year honors belong to Cal State East Bay’s Moses Greene. Playing for his hometown team, the Hayward native turned in two top-10 performances in his freshman campaign. Averaging 73.93 strokes per round on the season, Greene’s best finishes both came in the spring, taking ninth at the Bay Area Invitational in Pleasanton before another ninth-place finish at the NDNU Argonaut Invitational in Livermore in what would prove to be the season’s final event.
Eight of the ten men selected for the All-CCAA Team are repeat honorees. Joining Svard, Kim and Colla are the Stanislaus State duo of Kobie Lockwood and first-time selection Brad Sparrer. Sonoma State twosome of Blake Bourelle and Devin Gregg are each earning their second selection to the All-CCAA team, as is Joey Herrera of Cal State East Bay. Cal State San Marcos senior Ryan Bisharat bumped up from an honorable mention nod a season ago to earn one of the 10 spots on the team. Rounding out the honorees is UC San Diego senior Hayden Hui, earning his third distinction from the league.
UC San Diego coach Fred Hanover, in his second season at the helm of the Tritons, has earned his first - and final - nod as CCAA Coach of the Year. Competing in their 20th season in the CCAA, UC San Diego is transitioning to the Division I Big West beginning in 2020-21. This year, Hanover guided the Tritons to five top-10 team finishes, including a runner-up finish at the Dennis Rose Invitational to close the fall and a first-place showing at the Fujikura Invitational to open spring play.
While no postseason golf was played, including the CCAA Championships, the league is well-represented in the final rankings of the year. Cal State Monterey Bay landed in 23rd in the final GCAA Coaches poll with Sonoma State, UC San Diego, Chico State and Cal State East Bay receiving votes. Six of the league’s nine teams also stood in the top 10 in the lone NCAA Division II regional rankings of the spring.
