STOCKTON, Calif. - The final round of the NCAA Division II Men’s Golf West/South Central Regional, powered by Visit Stockton and the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), took place Saturday at The Reserve at Spanos Park.
Out of the 20 teams competing in the regional, six punched their tickets to the NCAA Division II Championship on May 18-22 at Boulder Creek Golf Club in Las Vegas. Additionally, two individual spots were awarded to the highest-finishing players whose teams did not advance to the national championship.
Western Washington won the regional with a final score of 8-under (283-282-291). The Vikings, led by head coach
Luke Bennett, punched their ticket to the finals for the first time since 2019. Bennett has now led the Vikings to two NCAA Finals appearances as a player and four as a head coach.
“I couldn’t be more proud of my players,” Bennett said. “They didn’t force anything.”
Vikings junior
Conrad Brown was the individual regional champion with a finishing score of 10-under (70-66-70).
“I played solid all week and I’m so happy with my individual performance,” Brown said.
West Texas A&M punched its ticket to a third straight NCAA Finals, finishing with a score of 5-under (284-281-294), good enough for second place in the West/South Central Regional. Head coach
Axel Ochoa, a winner of two NAIA National Championships as a player, is looking to lead the Buffaloes back to match play, where they were semifinalists two years ago.
“We’re going to simulate match play next week in practice,” Ochoa said. “They’ll be ready.”
The highest-placing CCAA team, Cal State East Bay, punched its ticket to Las Vegas with an even-par finish (287-288-289), good for third overall in the tournament. The Pioneers, led by head coach
Alan Sue, are back in the finals for a second straight year and are looking to build on a 14th-place finish last year at PGA National.
“We have a talented group and as long as we’re not hurting ourselves, we have a chance,” Sue said.
The Colorado Christian Cougars started the day three shots outside of a transfer spot, but after posting a finishing score of 3-over (289-289-289), they finished tied for fourth overall.
Bradley Mulder, who was part of the national championship-winning team as a freshman, led the team back with an eagle on 16 and a birdie on 18 to secure Colorado Christian’s trip back to the championship.
“We committed as a team to not look at the leaderboard and stick to our process, and I’m so happy with where we are at,” Mulder said.
“We knew we couldn’t be attached to the leaderboard at the start of the day,” first-year head coach
Cameron Sandland said. “I’m so proud of how the boys played in the wind.” Sandland was part of the Cougars’ national championship team as a player in 2024.
Cal State San Marcos started the day six shots out of first place, but after going out in the earlier, more favorable wind conditions, the Cougars shot 2-under, the low team round of the day, and finished tied for fourth in the region. Under veteran head coach
Greg Hutton, San Marcos is officially headed to the finals for the first time in school history.
“This team is so close to each other and making it to the finals is a cherry on top of that,” Hutton said.
The final team advancing from the regional was fellow CCAA program Cal State San Bernardino.
Kamron Hopson, the last player on the course, made a 35-foot birdie putt on the final hole to secure the team’s 4-over finish (286-280-302) and help the Coyotes avoid a three-team playoff for the final spot.
“The putt felt great when I realized what it meant,” Hopson said.
The two individuals who advanced to the NCAA Finals were
Archie Wyatt of Colorado State Pueblo and
Dylan Bercan of Hawaii Hilo, who both finished the tournament at 3-under par.
For Wyatt, the team captain from Scotland, his final-round score of 1-over was enough to earn a trip to nationals as an individual.
For Bercan, the fifth-year senior, his final-round 4-under 68 earned him the first trip to nationals of his career.
“An hour ago I thought I had played my last hole of college golf,” Bercan said. “It still hasn’t set in that I’m going to the championships.”
The 2026 NCAA Division II Men’s Golf Championship begins May 18.
