A spring benchmark 382 student-athletes from across the 13 member institutions of the CCAA have been recognized for their work in the classroom as a member of the 2019 CCAA Spring All-Academic Team.
The seasonal academic awards which were instituted in 2014, showcase individuals who are a sophomore in athletic standing or higher who maintain at least a 3.3 cumulative grade-point average while competing in a Conference-sponsored sport. For the spring, athletes who compete in the sports of men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s track and field, softball and baseball with valid academic credentials are eligible for recognition. New this season, these awards were based on the complete academic year grades, providing a more robust representation of classroom success throughout the year.
Of the 382 individuals making the grade, a total of 153 student-athletes are making a repeat appearance to the CCAA’s Spring All-Academic Team with 32 seeing their name for the third time of their collegiate career. Four-time honorees include Cal State San Marcos baseball player Dominic Antonacci (Business Administration – Finance), Cal Poly Pomona baseball player Alex Kline (Business – Computer Information Systems), Chico State women’s track & field athlete Elyssa Schall (Exercise Physiology).
Despite the 3.3 gpa threshold for inclusion, athletes across the league demonstrate their prowess in the classroom at even higher levels. An impressive tally of 219 men and women maintain at least a 3.5 gpa, with 72 individuals reaching an even more stringent benchmark of 3.8.
Nine men and women keep a 4.0 in their academic endeavors, with six competitors hailing from Cal State Monterey Bay. The five track & field athletes to keep the highest standards in the classroom include Cal State Monterey Bay’s Tarra Moore (Kinesiology) and Alexandra Baron (Business Administration), Cal State East Bay graduate Student Claire Beaty (Kinesiology), Stanislaus State’s Kerry Young (Psychology) and Chico State men’s sprinter Hakim Tokhi (Exercise Physiology). Cal State Monterey Bay baseball players Troy Bachand (Mathematics) and Max Jones (Business Administration) are joined by Otter golfers Brooke Baumgardner (Business Administration) and Maximilian Grieb (Business Administration) to round out the nine holding perfect marks.
The sports of women’s track & field (127) and baseball (106) boast a three-digit number of honorees, followed by softball (74), men’s track & field (42), women’s golf (17) and men’s golf (16).
By school, Cal State San Marcos spring student-athletes lead the way for the second-consecutive year with 47. Chico State is right behind with 46, followed by Cal State Monterey Bay at 40 and UC San Diego with 38 individuals to round out the top four. Cal State East Bay (33) and Cal Poly Pomona (29) follow with the pair of Sonoma State and Stanislaus State (26) next in the numbers. Humboldt State (22), Cal State Dominguez Hills (21), San Francisco State (20), Cal State San Bernardino (19) and Cal State LA (15) round out the spring selections by school.
The CCAA recognizes individuals academically per season – fall, winter, and spring – for all CCAA sponsored sports. In order to earn CCAA All-Academic team honors, a student-athlete must be of sophomore athletic standing or higher, and own a 3.3 cumulative GPA or better while competing in a Conference-sponsored sport in that season.
The CCAA Winter All-Academic Team consists of eligible student-athletes who compete in the sports of men's and women's golf, men’s and women’s track & field, softball and baseball. Recently, the
79-member Winter All-Academic Team was released, and
312 student-athletes were already recognized on the Fall All-Academic Team. That brings the total number of seasonal All-Academic Award winners to 773 for the 2018-19 school year.
