An impressive tally of 79 men's and women's basketball competitors across the CCAA have been honored for their work in the classroom as members of the 2018-19 CCAA Winter All-Academic Team.
Instituted in 2014, the seasonal academic awards showcase individuals who are a sophomore in athletic standing or higher who maintain at least a 3.3 cumulative grade-point average while competing in a Conference-sponsored sport. New this season, these awards were based on the complete academic year grades, providing a more robust representation of classroom success throughout the year.
Although the requirement for distinction is a 3.3 cumulative gpa, more than half of the men and women honored hold at least a 3.5 in their respective studies with 48 reaching the higher threshold in their academic pursuits. At an even more stringent minimum of 3.8, 15 individuals make the grade.
Of the 79 honorees, 32 are making a repeat appearance on the Winter All-Academic Team. Stanislaus State's Samantha Rudd, McKena Barker of Chico State and San Francisco State's Ryne Williams are all earning the third seasonal all-academic distinction of their career.
Barker, who is pursuing a graduate degree in Public Administration, is one of two individuals who carry a 4.0 grade-point average. She is joined by San Francisco State junior Zane Paddon (Business-Accounting) in keeping a perfect gpa.
By program, Cal State East Bay boasts 10 men and women on the lists, as the Pioneers make up 12.6 percent of the total award recipients. Seven members of the Cal State East Bay women's basketball team lead the charge in the classroom, as half of their roster maintains at least a 3.3 gpa.
Stanislaus State is next on the list with nine selections, followed by the trio of Humboldt State, Sonoma State and San Francisco State with eight individuals apiece. Chico State, Cal State Monterey Bay, and UC San Diego have seven honorees each. Cal State LA (5), Cal State Dominguez Hills (4), Cal State San Marcos (4), and Cal State San Bernardino (2) round out the breakdown by program.
The CCAA recognizes individuals academically per season – fall, winter, and spring – for all CCAA sponsored sports. In order to earn CCAA All-Academic team honors, a student-athlete must be of sophomore athletic standing or higher, and own a 3.3 cumulative GPA or better while competing in a Conference-sponsored sport in that season.
The CCAA Winter All-Academic Team consists of eligible student-athletes who compete in the sports of men's and women's basketball. The Spring All-Academic Team, slated to be released tomorrow, consists of student-athletes from men's and women's golf, men's and women's track and field, softball and baseball. A total of
312 student-athletes were already recognized on the Fall All-Academic Team, honoring those eligible competitors in men's and women's cross country, men's and women's soccer and volleyball.
