UC San Diego’s Claudia Cox and San Francisco State’s Courtney Massengale have been named CCAA Track and Field Athlete of the Week for March 18-24, respectively.
Cox continued her spectacular 2019 hurdles season with an event win at the Aztec Invitational. The junior from Greenville, N.C., took first in the 400 hurdles, crossing the line in 1:00.04, beating out second-place finisher Maya Brosch of San Diego State (1:00.68) and third-place finisher Haley Lubow of Wisconsin (1:00.80) to yet again run a provisional qualifying race for the Tritons. This is Cox’ third weekly award of the season
Massengale, a thrower from Yuba City, rang up a personal-best 43.45 meter throw in the javelin at the Cal Poly ShareSLO Invitational to take second in the event. Her distance stands as the third-best mark in program history and improves on her provisional mark set last weekend. The senior earned gold in discus with a hurl of 50.66 meters for another provisional improvement and the fifth-best throw in the nation this season en route to her third career weekly honor.
UC San Diego hosts the California Collegiate Open Saturday, while San Francisco State competes in a pair of Bay Area meets over the weekend in the Mike Fanelli Track Classic and the Stanford Invitational.
