Ronquillo, Caraway Earn Weekly Track and Field Awards

With the nation’s best run highlighting the weekend, Angelina Ronquillo of Cal State East Bay and UC San Diego’s Natalie Caraway have claimed CCAA Track and Field Athlete of the Week status for March 3-10.

Ronquillo, a sophomore from Bakersfield, showed her speed and endurance Saturday at the Oxy Distance Carnival. Taking seventh in a field of 153 competitors representing all collegiate divisions, Ronquille crossed the line in 17:09.37. The mark is the fastest 5K by a Division II runner this year by more than 13 seconds, and ranks second in Cal State East Bay history.

Caraway was among the top highlights of the day for the Tritons in their home meet over the weekend. The senior from Granite Bay posted provisional-qualifying marks in both the high jump and triple jump, finishing the the top two in each event. Caraway took first overall in the high jump, clearing 5 feet, 6.50 inches (1.69 meters), while placing second in the triple jump with a leap of 38-10.50 (11.85 m). As a team, the Triton women took first at the San Diego Collegiate Challenge.

Next for the Pioneers is the Sacramento State Hornet Invitational March 16, while the Tritons compete at the Ross and Sharon Irwin Collegiate Scoring Meet in San Diego this Saturday.
