Cox, Soto Earn Season's First Track & Field Honors


After solid season opening performances at the Pomona-Pitzer All Comers Meet, UC San Diego hurdler Claudia Cox and Cal State San Bernardino thrower Victoria Soto have been named CCAA Track and Field Athlete of the Week for Feb. 11-17, respectively.

Soto, a freshman from Indio opened up her collegiate career for Cal State San Bernardino in style, breaking the school record in the discus and placing second with a throw of 37.90 meters. She earned a fourth-place finish in the shot put after recording a mark of 9.98 meters, which stands as fourth-best in school history in the event.

Cox, a junior from Greenville, N.C. posted an early provisional qualifying time of 59.95 seconds in the 400 meter hurdles, where she took home first place in the 14-woman field, as the only competitor to break the 1-minute mark. She also placed third in the 100 hurdles (14.91 s) behind only the 2017 Chinese national champion Yinfeng Chen (14.42) and one-hundredth of a second behind a runner for Masters France (14.90).

Both the Tritons and Coyotes are back in action this Saturday at the Rossi Relays in Claremont.
