LA JOLLA, Calif. - The All-CCAA men’s soccer teams and major award winners have been announced, a day in advance of the semifinal round of the
2019 CCAA Men’s Soccer Tournament in La Jolla.
Cal Poly Pomona senior Jimmie Villalobos is the clear CCAA Offensive Player of the Year courtesy of his league-leading 17 goals, which rank him second in the West Region and in a tie for third nationally in Division II. That haul notably included two hat tricks over the past five games, and an eight-match goal-scoring streak from Sept. 12-Oct. 13. Villalobos has added six assists for 40 total points, which pace the West, and also give him a share of third in the country. He is one of eight offensive stars around Division II who are averaging at least one goal per game, having started all 17 contests for the Broncos. Villalobos gives CPP five CCAA Offensive Player of the Year distinctions, coming over the last nine seasons.
Junior Morten Bjoershol is Cal State LA’s second CCAA Defensive Player of the Year, the other being Taylor Rivas in 2011. Bjoershol has started all 16 games, spearheading 11 Golden Eagle clean sheets for the nation’s second-ranked defense, while only coming off the pitch for a total of 30 minutes. He has added a pair of goals offensively, including the game-winner at Humboldt State on the final day of the regular season that clinched the banner for his squad.
In just the second season of the award, Cal State LA senior Alexander Brems is the CCAA Goalkeeper of the Year. He leads the league and is tied for fourth nationally with his 10 individual shutouts. Five of them came in succession heading into last Saturday’s regular-season finale. Brems’ .368 goals-against average is tops in the West Region and third in Division II. He has played all but 20 minutes this season.
Jacob Chong, a redshirt freshman striker for Chico State, is the CCAA Newcomer of the Year. The Encinitas native paced the Wildcats in both goals (10) and total points (24) in his first on-the-field season of college soccer. Seven goals, including a hat trick, and three assists, came during Chico State’s five-match win streak to conclude CCAA play, leading to a fourth-straight CCAA Tournament appearance. Chong is the program’s fifth CCAA Newcomer of the Year in the 14-year history of the award.
Frank Daroma is the CCAA Freshman of the Year after helping guide Cal State San Bernardino to a No. 13 national ranking in the final regular-season poll, now at 12-2-3 following Tuesday’s 1-0 home win over Chico State in the first round of the CCAA Tournament. Daroma has started 14 of 15 matches played on the year, and is tied for third on the Coyotes’ points chart with 10, from three goals and four assists. He is Cal State San Bernardino’s first CCAA Freshman of the Year since Debray Hollimon in 2014.
Chris Chamides had Cal State LA favored to finish atop the CCAA standings, and his third-ranked Golden Eagles did not disappoint, navigating the regular season as one of three remaining unbeatens at 15-0-1, and regular-season champions of the CCAA for the first time since 2013. They were in the top 10 of all nine in-season editions of the United Soccer Coaches national poll. Chamides is now a four-time honoree for his 17-year Cal State LA career, with previous selections in 2004, 2009 and 2011.
Five schools are represented on the All-CCAA first and second teams. Bjoershol, Villalobos and senior Cal State LA midfielder Tim Klefisch are the only repeat first-teamers, with Villalobos indeed now three-for-three after arriving at Cal Poly Pomona.
Joining that grouping on on this year’s All-CCAA First Team, are Cal State LA junior midfielder David Elizaga, Broncos’ standouts Eduardo Faria and Jason Ramos, UC San Diego captains Brett Jones and Kelvin Uribe, and senior Humboldt State forward Isaiah Dairo.
Cal State LA led all sides with four All-CCAA first-teamers. Cal Poly Pomona had three, and UC San Diego a pair. Rounding out the squad was one student-athlete each from Cal State San Bernardino and Humboldt State. All told, 12 of the 13 programs are represented on the listings. All six individual awards, as well as the All-CCAA selections, were voted on by the CCAA’s 13 head coaches.
