#6 Cal State San Bernardino 5, #2 Point Loma 2 [Box score]
Cal State San Bernardino forced a winner-take-all championship game by defeating Point Loma 5-2 in the first game on Saturday.
After starting pitchers Devyn Hernandez (CSUSB) and Devin Norton (PLNU) delivered four scoreless innings to open the game, the Coyotes broke through with three home runs in the fifth inning.
Alejandro McKay ended the scoreless tie with a solo homer before Dom Dominguez and Garret Barto hit back-to-back shots later in the inning to put CSUSB up 4-0.
That would be all Hernandez needed as he worked into the ninth inning. The CCAA Tournament's Most Outstanding Player went 8.1 innings, allowing 12 hits but only two runs. He walked two and struck out six. Kailer Saunders entered the game after two Sea Lions reached base in the ninth. He got the final two outs to earn his first save.
Tyson Pettingill was the only Coyote to record a multi-hit game as they were outhit12-9. However, five of CSUSB's nine hits went for extra bases, while just one of PLNU's 12 was not a single.
#2 Point Loma 10, #6 Cal State San Bernardino 9 (10 inn.) [Box score]
In an instant classic, where neither team is willing even to concede an out, Point Loma outlasted Cal State San Bernardino 10-9 in extra innings to advance to the NCAA Super Regional.
CSUSB trailed 5-3 in the sixth inning when Jeremy Giesegh tied the game with a two-run homer. The next inning, Giesegh gave the Coyotes their first lead of the game with a three-run homer to left (8-5).
That lead would not stand long as Point Loma answered with three runs in the top of the eighth, and regained the lead with another run in the ninth. CSUSB tied the game on an error to send it to extra innings.
In the 10th, PLNU pushed across a run on a two-out single to regain the lead (10-9). In the bottom of the inning, the leadoff batter for CSUSB would reach base on a hit-by-pitch and was sacrificed over to second base. The next two Coyote batters both squared up the first pitch they saw, but each line drive found the glove of the center fielder.
Giesegh finished 3-for-6 with a double, two home runs, and six RBI. Keedan Nadeau was 3-for-4 with three runs scored. Juni Rodriguez added a home run and two runs scored. Tristan Moore went 4-for-4 with a double for PLNU.
