Cal State San Bernardino and Cal State Monterey Bay will both have to sweep doubleheaders on Saturday to stay alive in the postseason.
#5 Northwest Nazarene 14, #1 Cal State Monterey Bay 12 [Box score]
Northwest Nazarene scored seven runs in the top of the ninth to erase a five-run deficit and stun Cal State Monterey Bay 14-12.
The Otters had taken a 12-6 lead after scoring four in the fifth inning and another three in the sixth. Conner Smith had a home run and three RBI in those two innings as it looked like CSUMB had seized control of the game.
NNU got one run back in the eighth inning and then exploded for seven runs in the ninth, all with two outs. Jake Mestas had a bases-clearing triple, and Carter Walsh capped the inning with a three-run home run.
Smith and James Starkus each went 2-for-5 and recorded a home run and three RBI. Kyle Olimpia went 4-for-5 with a double, two RBI, and two runs scored. Xander Sielken also had three hits as CSUMB outhit NNU 18-13.
#2 Point Loma 19, #6 Cal State San Bernardino 13 [Box score]
In a slugfest for the ages, it was Point Loma that prevailed with a 19-13 win over Cal State San Bernardino.
The Coyotes had an early 5-2 lead, but PLNU was relentless, and it took control on Jake Schwartz's two-run single (9-7). He would homer two innings later to put the Sea Lions up 12-7. CSUSB cut its deficit to 12-9 on Garret Barto's home run in the bottom of the 6th, but it would get no closer the rest of the way.
Keedan Nadeau went 2-for-5 with five RBI and two runs scored. He hit a grand slam as part of the Coyotes' opening five-run inning. Jeremy Giesegh added a solo home run as part of that five-run first inning. It would be one of three run-scoring hits he would have on the day as he finished 3-for-5 with a home run and four RBI. Schwartz would finish with six RBI for PLNU.
