Fast start sends Cal State LA to the semifinals

POMONA, Calif. – No. 3 seed Cal State LA scored the first 13 points of the game, and never trailed en route to a 74-40 win over No. 6 seed Cal State Monterey Bay in the quarterfinals of the 2026 CCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament.

The 2025-26 CCAA Player of the Year, Nevaeh Asiasi led all student-athletes with 21 points and 18 rebounds. She also had five assists, a steal, and a block. Ariyah Smith added 11 points as 11 student-athletes got in the scoring column for the Golden Eagles.

Cal State LA came to play from the opening tip as it went on a 13-0 run over the first four minutes of the game. CSULA would build a 19-4 advantage midway through the quarter and take a 42-26 halftime lead.

The Golden Eagles would come out of halftime with intensity on the defensive end. They held the Otters to only four points in the third quarter and pushed their lead to 25 points (55-30) by outscoring them 13-4. Cal State LA went on to win 74-40 and earn a spot in the semifinals.

Cal State LA will face the No. 2 seed Cal Poly Humboldt in the semifinals on Friday, March 6 at Noon.
