LOS ANGELES – No. 3 seed San Francisco State scored six first-inning runs and held on to defeat No. 2 seed Cal State Dominguez Hills in the quarterfinal round of the 2025 CCAA Baseball Tournament presented by FloCollege.
The Gators batted around in the first to score their six runs.
Nicholas Allred and
Derek LaFerriere had run-scoring hits in the inning, while
Justin Johnson brought in a run and a groundout, and
Daniel Santos on a hit-by-pitch. SFSU took full advantage of the inning when they added two more runs later on an error by CSUDH.
With the lead, starter
David Eichhorn attacked the strike zone and put up three scoreless innings. He allowed a solo home run in the fourth before running into trouble in the fifth.
Trey Winget and
Quinn Johnson hit home runs in the inning to cut the Gators’ lead to five (9-4). Eichhorn would bounce back with a scoreless sixth and hand the ball over with SF State leading 9-4. A two-run home run by Santos extended the lead to 11-4 after seven.
Cal State Dominguez Hills would mount a few late rallies to challenge the Gators’ lead. CSUDH scored three in the seventh on a two-run single by Quinn Johnson and a sacrifice fly by
Noah Karliner to bring it back to 11-7. The Toros would bring the go-ahead run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth as they loaded the bases with two out.
SF State then turned to
River Diaz De Leon, who, after a walk, got a strikeout to end the game. It was his first save of the season.
Santos led SF State with three RBI. He is now tied for the program lead with Justin Johnson.
Stephen Espinoza went 2-for-4 with a walk and three runs scored. Murillo, Allred, and LaFerriere all added multi-hit games.
Quinn Johnson led the Dominguez Hills offense. The third baseman went 2-for-4 with a home run, three RBI, and two runs scored. Trey Winget was 2-for-5 with a home run, two RBI, and two runs scored.
Noah Karliner had a monster home run in the fourth inning to get the Toros on the board. He finished 1-for-3 with a walk, a home run, and two RBI.
David Eichhorn earned the win to improve to 6-1. The right-hander allowed six hits and four runs in six innings. He walked two (both in the first inning) and struck out five.
SF State will advance in the winner’s portion of the 2025 CCAA Baseball Tournament presented by FloCollege. It will face the No. 1 seed on Friday, May 9, at 2 p.m. Cal State Dominguez Hills drops into the elimination portion of the bracket. It will play Chico State later this evening in an elimination game.
