LOS ANGELES – No. 1 seed Cal State Monterey Bay outlasted No. 4 seed Chico State to earn a 12-9 win in the quarterfinal of the 2025 CCAA Baseball Tournament presented by FloCollege.
Every starter for the Otters had a hit as they put up 15 in the game and drew seven walks.
Dominic Felice went 3-for-4 with a walk and two runs scored.
Noah Zertuche collected three hits and scored two runs as the No. 9 hitter. CCAA Player of the Year
KW Quilici went 2-for-4 with three runs and three stolen bases.
Max Farfan provided the game's only home run with his three-run shot in the eighth.
Six Wildcats posted multi-hit games, including
Carson Case, who went 3-for-4 with a home run and two runs scored. Thade Miller,
Phoenix Casias,
Daniel Vierra,
Casey Vogan, and
Ernie Arambula added two hits apiece.
Cal State Monterey Bay put up single runs in the first three innings to take the early lead. Chico State battled back against starter
Nate Rohlicek with a two-run double by Arambula in the fourth before putting up three runs in the fifth to take a 5-3 lead.
The opportunity for a big inning for the Otters would come in the sixth, and they would seize on the opportunity. After Felice walked to lead off the inning, Zertuche doubled to put runners at second and third with no outs. A balk would bring Felice from third, and Zertuche would come in to score two batters later when Quilici reached on an error to tie the game at 5-5. A wild pitch would score
Jacob Dressler before Quilici came in to score on a two-out single by
Jaden Sheppard. CSUMB would not trail the rest of the way.
CSUMB would continue to add to their total with two more in the seventh and three in the eighth. They would need every run as Chico State continued to score. The Wildcats rallied for three runs in the 8th as Casias, Baker, and Vierra all knocked in runs to cut the Otters’ lead to one (9-8).
Cal State Monterey Bay responded by putting the first two runners on and bringing
Max Farfan to the plate. The All-CCAA shortstop took a pitch before launching the next offering over the tall right-field wall for a three-run home run.
Chico State would get a solo home run in the ninth from Case, but
Andrew Kotin did not allow another hit as the Otters sealed the win.
Dylan Gardner (4-1) earned the win in relief of Rohlicek. Kotin collected the save (7) as he entered the game in the eighth with the tying and go-ahead runs on base.
Cal State Monterey Bay will advance in the winner’s bracket and play the winner of Cal State Dominguez Hills and San Francisco State on Friday, May 9, at 2 p.m.
