LOS ANGELES - For just the second time in CCAA history, a team has three-peated as the champion in the CCAA Baseball Tournament presented by FloCollege. Cal State Monterey Bay put 12 runs on the board to defeat San Francisco State 12-8 and claim its third consecutive CCAA Tournament title.

The championship game featured two of the top offenses in the conference, and it was a slugfest early before the Otters’ bullpen came through late to shut the door.

CSUMB had to overcome a four-run first inning by SF State as Justin Johnson continued his excellent tournament by capping off the inning with a three-run homer. The Otters answered by putting three runs on the board in their half of the inning. Cole Murchison had the big hit of the inning as he doubled in Javier Felix with two out to pull the Otters within one (4-3).

Murchison would go on to be named the MVP of the CCAA Tournament as he went 8-for-11 with two doubles, three RBI, four walks, and four runs scored. In the championship game, he sealed those honors by going 4-for-5 with two doubles, a run scored, and three RBI.

SF State tacked on single runs in the third and fourth innings, but each time the Otters avoided a bigger inning. A run-scoring double by Max Farhan, an RBI-groundout by Jimmy Garcia, and a bases-loaded hit by pitch on Felix tied the game at 6-6 after four innings.

Nicholas Cook gave the Gators back the lead in the fifth on a single to left to score AJ Schrader, but it could have been a bigger inning. Kyle Giovannoni entered the game with a two-on, no-out situation and escaped by allowing just one run. That would be the last lead SF State would have.

The Otters went back in front for good with four runs in the bottom of the inning. Three bullpen arms would then combine to allow three hits and one run over the next four innings.

The fifth inning rally started when Max Farfan tripled with one out and tied the game on a passed ball. Then, with two on and two out, Jacob Dressler came through with a go-ahead double to plate Garcia and Dominic Felice. It was the second consecutive game that Dressler provided the go-ahead hit for the Otters.

Giovannoni (4-0) posted a scoreless sixth inning before handing the ball over to Jacob Parks, who struck out two in his one inning of work.

Drew Aguiar entered the game in the eighth and got the final six outs to earn the save. He pitched around an error to start the eighth by getting two groundouts and a strikeout. His only blemish was a solo home run to Johnson to lead off the ninth, but Aguiar quickly shook it off to record three quick outs and seal the win.

In the last two final tournament games, the Otters' bullpen had five pitchers combined to throw 9.1 innings, allowing only five hits and one run. They walked four and struck out eight.

Justin Johnson had an incredible five tournament games for the Gators. The senior went 9-for-23 with four home runs and 12 RBI. He was named to the all-tournament team along with his teammates Michael Cunningham, Derek LaFerriere, and Nicholas Allred.

Murchison’s MVP selection was one of five all-tournament selections for CSUMB. He was joined on the all-tournament team by his JC teammate Jacob Dressler, along with Aiden Lee, Jimmy Garcia, and Max Farfan.

This was the second consecutive season SF State and Cal State Monterey Bay met in the tournament championship. It is the first year in the 25-year history of the tournament that two teams met for the title in consecutive seasons.

The win gives Cal State Monterey Bay the CCAA’s automatic bid to the NCAA West Regional beginning next week. SF State entered the weekend as the No. 7 team in the region and will await its fate on the NCAA Selection Show on Sunday, May 11 at 7:30 p.m. on NCAA.com.
