LOS ANGELES –
Jimmy Garcia’s bases-clearing double in the eighth tied the game, and he came in to score on a two-out single by
Jacob Dressler to complete the comeback from a five-run deficit as No. 1 seed Cal State Monterey Bay defeated No. 3 seed San Francisco State 7-6 in the semifinals of the 2025 CCAA Baseball Tournament presented by FloCollege.
San Francisco State put up five runs in the fifth inning on a three-run homer by
Michael Cunningham and a two-run shot by
Justin Johnson to go in front 6-1. The Otters chipped away at the lead with single runs in the sixth and seventh to make it 6-3.
The Otters’ eighth-inning comeback started with an error and a walk.
Max Farhan then loaded the bases with a single. The Gators were able to get two outs without allowing a run to score. That brought Garcia to the plate with two outs and the bases still loaded. On the third pitch of the at-bat, he drove the ball the opposite way off the right-centerfield wall to clear the bases and tie the game (6-6). Senior
Jacob Dressler provided the go-ahead run when he lined a single up the middle to bring in Garcia from second base.
The Otters then turned to
Aiden Lee, who pitched the final two innings without yielding a run to earn his first save. Lee was only part of the Otters’ bullpen that gave CSUMB a chance at the comeback by not yielding a run in the final 4.1 innings.
Daniel Flores came into the game after the Gators had put five runs in the fifth. He got the final out and then proceeded to pitch two more scoreless innings before handing the ball off to Lee. Flores was credited with his first win of the season.
Garcia finished 2-for-5 with a double and four two-out RBI.
Cole Murchison went 3-for-4 with a run scored. Dessler also had a multi-hit game as the third baseman went 2-for-5 with an RBI
Justin Johnson was 3-for-5 with a home run and two RBI for San Francisco State. First baseman
Jackson Wood also collected three hits. Cunningham made his one hit count with a three-run homer.
Starter
Ryan Garza pitched very well for the Gators before leaving in the sixth. He allowed only two runs in 5.1 innings. He gave up six hits and two walks, while striking out two.
Cal State Monterey Bay advances to the championship game on Saturday, May 10 at 1 p.m. It will face the winner of Chico State and San Francisco State who play in an elimination game on Friday night.
