MONMOUTH, Ore. -
Damian Garcia led the Chico State men's cross country team to its ninth consecutive NCAA West Regional title on Saturday, Nov. 9.
Garcia posted a time of 29:26.33 on the 10k course at the Ash Creek Preserve to win the race by four seconds and lead a pack of Chico State scoring runners that all finished in the top 31.
The Wildcats finished with a winning score of 75 points. Those points and places were all critical as both Western Washington and Cal Poly Pomona also finished with fewer than 100 points as the Wildcats had their closest finish since 2015, when they won the regional by just two points over CPP.
Ricardo Vargas paced the five Cal Poly Pomona runners, who all finished at 33rd or better, with a second-place finish in a personal-record time of 29:30.46. The Broncos posted 97 points to maintain their predicted third-place finish and earn a trip to the NCAA Championships for the third consecutive season, and 25th time in program history.
Cal State San Marcos gave the CCAA three teams of the first seven teams across the finish line as they placed seventh with 190 points.
Alan Jimenez finished ninth (29:58.53) and Sankalp Shastri finished 19th (30:25.86) to lead the Cougars to their best finish since 2021 (sixth).
Chico State's
Mario Giannini,
Matthew Gordon and
Jesus Villareal all joined Garcia on the awards stand after placing in the top 25 to earn all-region honors. The 2025 CCAA Freshman of the Year,
Jackson Stream locked in the final score of 75 for the Wildcats with his 31st-place finish.
Cal Poly Pomona had three runners earn all-region recognition. In addition to Vargas,
Juan Ramos and
Jimmy Guerrero were also awarded regional honors after placing 14th and 20th, respectively.
Stanislaus State's
Mason Oliveira just missed claiming an all-region honor as he placed 26th with a career-best time of 30:34.68 on the 10k course. He helped the Warriors secure a 13th-place finish with 338 points.
Other CCAA team finishes included Cal State East Bay (16th), Cal Poly Humboldt (19th), Cal State Monterey Bay (20th), San Francisco State (22nd), and Cal State LA (23rd).
The top three teams from each NCAA Division II regional meet automatically qualify for the national championship. For individual qualifiers, the top two finishers who are not on an automatically qualifying team earn a spot, along with all other individuals who finish in the top five at the regional and are not on a qualifying team.
The NCAA Division II Men's and Women's Cross Country Committee will announce at-large team and individual selections on Monday, Nov. 10, at 5 p.m. EST on
www.ncaa.com, to complete the championship field.
