TURLOCK, Calif. - It was the closest finish between the top three teams at the CCAA Track & Field Championships in the past 12 years. Still, in the end, Cal Poly Pomona emerged victorious with their third consecutive CCAA Women's Track & Field Championship.
The Broncos earned 159.5 points over the three-day competition, finishing ahead of Chico State (130.5) and Cal State San Bernardino (127).
The Broncos had just two individual event winners but could pick up points in nearly every event.
Ayana Fields won the women's 200m with a time of 24.32. It was her third consecutive CCAA 200m Championship and sixth individual title overall. She also partnered with
Jaelyn Thomas,
Yuna Queniat, and
Ari Milton to capture the 4x400m relay title for the Broncos for the third straight season.
Shona Christensen gave CPP a champion in the field events as she threw the shot put 43-10 (13.36m).
The conference coaches voted Cal State LA's
Jonon Young the CCAA Field Athlete of the Meet. On Friday night, she shattered the conference meet's long jump record, which had stood since 1992 (21-3.25/6.48m). Then, on Saturday, she came back and won the triple jump. The junior from Carson, Calif., hit 38-9.5 (11.82m) on her second attempt and stood firm the rest of the way to win the event by over two feet.
Stanislaus State's
Najwa Chouati won the High Point Award and Women's Track Athlete of the Meet. The senior from Barcelona won the 10k on Thursday evening before capturing second-place finishes in the 1500m (4:39.81) and 5000m (16:46.34) to accumulate a meet-best 26 team points for the Warriors, who placed fourth (94 points).
The person Chouati lost to in the 150m was her teammate,
Annie Wild, who would go on to be voted the CCAA Freshman of the Year. Even in the rain, the Ripon, Calif. freshman cut six and a half seconds from her prelim time to win the 1500m in her first CCAA Championship. She added another medal to her collection with a victory in the 800m (2:13.97) later in the day.
Cal State San Bernardino's
Alexandra Ackerman was selected as the Newcomer of the Year, and her coach,
Lauren Podgaysky, was chosen as the CCAA Women's Track & Field Coach of the Year. Ackerman won the 100m with a time of 11.99 and placed fifth in the 200m (25.54). She also helped the Coyotes' 4x100m relay team of Kyndahl Carter, Coryssa Hope, and Hailey Hunt win the conference title for the first time in CSUSB history.
Podgaysky coached Cal State San Bernardino to a third-place finish and a school-record 127 points. The points were the most a third-place team since 2015, and it was 50 points better than CSUSB's previous conference best.
In addition to Ackerman's win in the 100m and the 4x100m relay team, Podgaysky also coached
Alexis White and
Kyndahl Carter to CCAA Championship performances. Carter won the 100m hurdles with a time of 14.13, and White won the 400m (55.51).
Chico State's
Marissa D'Atri completed her goal of becoming a three-time champion in two different events. After winning the 3k steeple case yesterday, D'Atri returned and won the 5000m with an NCAA Provisional Qualifying time of 16:39.92. She has won every steeple chase and 5k event since the CCAA Championships took a two-year hiatus (2020-21).
Sonoma State's
Alex Boyle was named the recipient of the conference's Elite 13 Award. The junior Mathematics major had the highest cumulative GPA among all competitors that reached the CCAA Championships.
