Cal Poly Pomona 13, Cal State San Marcos 5 [Box score]
Marco Malerba went 5-for-5 and reached base in all six plate appearances to lead No. 4 seed Cal Poly Pomona to a 13-5 win over No. 5 seed Cal State San Marcos.
Malerba was one of four Broncos to have at least three this in the game as CPP outhit CSUSM 22-13.
Brent Cota went 4-for-5 with two RBI, a run scored, and a stolen base.
Nick Lugo had a grand slam in the third and finished 3-for-4 with five RBI and two runs scored.
Darius Price was 3-for-6 with a triple and two runs scored. Every member of the Broncos' starting lineup had at least one hit, and six recorded a multi-hit game.
Caleb Reyes threw eight innings to earn the win and improve to 8-1. He gave up 11 hits and five runs (three earned). He did not walk a batter and struck out six.
Cameron Mahaffy and
Evan Scalley each had three hits in the loss for CSUSM.
San Francisco State 8, Northwest Nazarene 6 [Box score]
No. 6 seed San Francisco State continued its knack for late-game comebacks in the postseason, scoring two in the top of the 10th to earn an 8-6 victory over No. 3 seed Northwest Nazarene in the first round of the 2024 NCAA West Regional. (May 16)
Third baseman
Kyle Olimpia went 3-for-5 and had the game-winning RBI in the 10th inning when he singled in
Joshua Johnson, who had led off the inning with a double and went to third on a fly out to center field. River Diaz de Leon tacked on an insurance run later in the inning with a two-out single to bring in
AJ Schrader.
Nathan Shinn closed the game with a perfect bottom of the 10th for his third save.
Ryan Garza gave the Gators a quality start on the mound with six innings of two-run ball. He allowed four hits and five walks while striking out six.
Ethan Remmers pitched a scoreless ninth to earn the victory and improve to 3-0.
Nick Allred was 2-for-5 with two runs scored. Schrader had a home run in the second inning to give the Gators the early lead. They would never trail in the game, even with NNU coming back to tie it twice.
Point Loma 4, Cal State San Marcos 2 [Box score]
Cal State San Marcos' historic season ended in the NCAA West Regional to No. 1 seed Point Loma, 4-2. (May 16)
Two runs in the first on a double by
Cameron Mahaffy gave the Cougars the early lead, but they could not add to it.
PLNU scored three runs, all with two outs, in the seventh to take its first lead of the day. CSUSM's starter,
Spencer Anderson, had been nearly unhittable to that point, allowing only two singles before the seventh.
He was lifted after giving up a solo home run and a double. Back-to-back singles with a throwing error mixed in gave the Sea Lions the lead at 3-2.
Cal State San Marcos had a chance to tie in the top of the eighth after CCAA Player of the Year
Garrett Teunissen reached on an error and was sacrificed to second.
Ethan Rivera singled with two out after a line out to the first baseman. Teunissen got the green light from third, but a perfect throw from the right fielder cut him down at the plate as the tying run.
Dylan Miller went seven innings to collect the win for Point Loma. He gave up six hits and two runs while walking one and striking out four. Anderson finished with two earned runs over 6.2 innings pitched for CSUSM. He gave up just four hits and two walks while striking out five. James Sashin earned his 17th save with a scoreless ninth.
Cal State Monterey Bay 6, Northwest Nazarene 3 [Box score]
Nate Rohlicek struck out eight over six innings to help lead No. 2 seed Cal State Monterey Bay to an opening-round 6-3 win over No. 3 seed Northwest Nazarene in the NCAA West Regional Pod #2. (May 16)
NNU grabbed the early lead with a solo home run in the top of the second inning before CCAA Tournament MVP
Nico Hartojo answered with a three-run shot in the bottom of the fourth to put CSUMB up 3-1.
In the fifth, the Nighthawks scored an unearned run to cut the Otters' lead to one (3-2). CSUMB answered back with another three runs in their half of the inning as
KW Quilici singled in
JJ Engman before coming around to score on Jaden Sheppard's 14th home run.
Rohlicek gave up one more run, but he worked through six innings to earn the win (6-3). He allowed six hits and three runs (two earned) while walking one and striking out eight.
Giovanni Costello pitched the final three innings to earn the save. He allowed two hits and no runs.
Cal State Monterey Bay will now face San Francisco State in a best-of-3 series to see who will advance to the NCAA West Super Regional. These teams also met last week for the CCAA Tournament Championship.
