POMONA, Calif. - No. 1 seed Cal State Monterey Bay had nothing going for it offensively all game as the Otters could not solve Cal Poly Pomona's starter Evan Adolphus through the first eight innings. When Adolphus had to come out of the game after eight scoreless innings and 121 pitches thrown, CSUMB rallied with four runs in the ninth and another in the 10th to win 5-4.

Cal Poly Pomona built a 3-0 lead after five innings and held that until the ninth. Anthony Gibbons started the scoring with a solo home run in the second and Beau Betten added another on a sac fly. Gibbons recorded another RBI when he brought in Jack Sanders with a two-out single in the fifth.

With the lead in hand, Adolphus cruised through eight innings. The junior right-hander allowed only three singles, two of which were immediately erased on double plays. He finished with three strikeouts and just one walk. Of his 121 pitches, 86 were for strikes, and he had a 1-2-3 inning to complete the eighth.

When the Otters saw Adolphus come out of the game, their hopes for a comeback intensified and those feelings were only elevated after their first two batters reached base. CPP pitcher Giancarlo Flores got the next two outs on an infield popup and a strikeout, bringing the Otters' RBI-leader Jaden Sheppard to the plate. Sheppard brought in both runs on a single to left before advancing to third base when the next batter, Nico Hartojo, doubled to left.

Sergio Solis came up with his team trailing 3-2 and two runners in scoring position. After falling behind in the count and fouling off a couple of pitches, he chopped one back up the middle to bring in Sheppard from third as the tying runs and NHartojo in from second as the go-ahead run (4-3).

That would be a short-lived lead as Johhny Pappas, the first Broncos batter in the bottom of the ninth, homered to left center to tie the game at 4-4. CPP continued to apply pressure as Marco Malerba walked, and AJ Nimeh was hit by a pitch with only one out in the inning. But that is when CSUMB's coach Walt White went to his bullpen and Ryan Io. The right-hander got Gibbons to line out to third base before Darius Price flew to right field to end the threat.

Max Farfan started the top of the 10th with a walk before going to second on a sacrifice bunt. The next batter, Chase Lindemann, hit an opposite-field single to left field, and the Otters sent Farfan, who scored the go-ahead run on a close play at the plate.

Io (4-0) came back out and pitched a flawless bottom of the 10th to earn his second win in as many days.

Lindemann went 3-for-5 with a double, leading all players with those three hits. He was the only Otter to record a multi-hit game, as they were outhit by the Broncos 11-9. Price, Pappas, Gibbons, and Nick Lugo all had two hits for Cal Poly Pomona.

CSUMB will advance to the CCAA Tournament Championship game on Saturday, May 11 at 2 p.m. Cal Poly Pomona will immediately turn around and play San Francisco State this evening in an elimination game.
