Cole Murchison of Cal State Monterey Bay has been named CCAA Baseball Player of the Week for the first week of play to start the 2024 season.
Murchison batted .538 (7-for-13) with two homers to lead the Otters offense power over Azusa Pacific. He posted a 1.538 OPS with a 1.000 slugging percentage and .538 on-base percentage. The first baseman/designated hitter drove in seven runs and scored five times as CSUMB outscored the Cougars 35-17.
The slugger from Toronto, Ontario, Canada, belted a three-run jack in the season-opener in the team’s 9-4 over on Thursday. He also went 3-for-6 and drove in four runs and scored three times in Friday’s doubleheader. He hit a solo shot in the sixth inning as CSUMB routed APU 13-7. In all, he had three two-hit games, including going 2-for-3 in the Otters 3-1 loss in the finale on Saturday.
Cal State Monterey Bay, which was picked by CCAA coaches as the preseason favorite, takes on Point Loma Nazarene in Seaside for a four-game set this week.
