For a team known for its offense, the defense of the Toros stepped up all weekend to deliver Cal State Dominguez Hills the championship trophy in the 2024 CCAA Men's Soccer Tournament presented by FloCollege. Today, the top-seeded Toros held No. 2 seed Cal Poly Pomona scoreless through regulation and both overtimes to earn a 6-5 victory in penalty kicks.
The Toros controlled the match early, outshooting the Broncos 10-0 in the first half. They also had four more shots in the second half (9-5), but each time the shot was on goal, the Broncos' keeper,
Luke Garciduenas, was there with the save. He finished with five saves in the match.
On the other side, Toros' goalkeeper
Arturo Magana was forced into only having to make two saves, but the last one he made preserved the championship for the Toros. Late in the second overtime, the Broncos connected on a long pass to
Jakob Singh who beat his defender and got a 1v1 with the keeper. Magana closed the distance, and when Singh shot it, he got an arm on the ball to deflect it away.
The match then turned to penalty kicks to determine the champion. Both teams made their first shots, but CPP missed its second, giving CSUDH the 2-1 lead through two rounds. In the fourth round, Garciduenas made a save, and
Marc Birkelund connected on his attempt to tie the shootout at 3-3. Both teams made their shots in the fifth and sixth rounds. In the seventh round, Magana made a save, giving his team the chance to win.
Davien Karanikolas seized his championship opportunity, burying the ball into the net for the winner.
This was Cal State Dominguez Hills' first CCAA Tournament Championship since 2009 and eighth overall. This is the first time the Toros have won the CCAA regular season and tournament championships in the same season.
Magana was named Defensive MVP of the Tournament.
Jose Peredia was named the Offensive MVP. Teammates
Kenny Lee and
Ndifor Ginyui joined them on the all-tournament team.
Mads Frederiksen,
Luke Garcideuenas,
Sam Lena, and
Fin Jackson earned all-tournament honors for Cal Poly Pomona.
Both teams await their postseason fate on the NCAA Selection Show on Monday, Nov. 18 at 3:30 p.m. The Toros have locked in the conference's automatic bid with today's tournament win. Cal Poly Pomona will hope to receive an at-large bid. The Broncos were ranked No. 7 in the latest regional rankings. Ten teams will qualify for the 2024 Super-Region 4.
