CSUSB's historic season ends in NCAA Baseball semifinals

[Box score]

All good rides must eventually come to an end. Cal State San Bernardino's historic season and fantastic postseason run came up one game short of reaching the championship series as it fell in the NCAA Baseball Championship semifinals to Rollins, 10-8. (June 9)

The Yotes defeated Rollins yesterday to force the winner-take-all showdown between the two teams, which opened the tournament against each other. The first two games were decided by five runs or more, but this one would come down to the final batter.

After the lead changed hands three times in the first innings, the Yotes went back in front on a Daryl Ruiz RBI single in the top of the seventh. He drove in Deshawn Johnson to make it 7-6 and cap off the second consecutive two-run inning.

The Tars answered in their half of the inning with a two-run single by Cam Meehan to retake the lead at 8-7. They would tack on two more in the bottom of the eighth on a home run by Ryan Coleman to put the Yotes in a three-run deficit going into the ninth.

Ruiz and Johnson reached to lead off the inning, and it looked like CSUSB might have another trademark miracle in it, as the fans have seen throughout the postseason, but Ryan Murphy was able to retire the next three batters to secure the win.

Johnson scored in each of his four plate appearances. He went 3-for-4 with a stolen base. Danny Garcia knocked in three runs, and Ruiz had two. Coleman finished 4-for-5 with a double, a home run, four RBI, and three runs scored for Rollins. Meehan also had three hits and three RBI.

Cal State San Bernardino ends its season with a program record of 48 wins (48-20).
