Cal State San Bernardino earned a 16-11 win over Rollins, a team that held them to one run in the opening game of the NCAA Baseball Championship.
The Yotes scored five runs in the first three innings and continued to pile on runs to post the highest-scoring output at the championships thus far.
Danny Garcia drove in five runs, three on a three-run homer in the fifth inning, as the Yotes scored four runs to extend their lead to 9-4.
Jason Shedlock scored four runs from his leadoff spot and had a go-ahead homer run when CSUSB retook the lead for good in the third inning.
Daryl Ruiz reached base in five of his six plate appearances. He went 2-for-3 with three walks. He also drove in one and scored three runs.
Giovanni Del Negro also crossed the plate three times. The outfielder went 2-for-4 with two RBI and three runs scored.
Cal State San Bernardino used four pitchers to get through the game, with
Benny Olguin covering five innings in the middle to earn the win and improve to 8-0.
Josh Sandoval started and went three innings, allowing two runs. Olguin took over in the fourth and pitched through the eighth. He gave up four runs on six hits with five strikeouts and no walks.
Chris Hernandez and
Conner Batzer finished the ninth.
After rallying for three runs in the third to break a 2-2 tie, CSUSB had to hold off Rollins in the fourth inning as a replay review went against the Yotes and had the tying run at third base. Olguin was able to strike out the next batter after a nearly 10-minute delay and end the threat.
Cal State San Bernardino expanded their lead with four-run innings in the fifth and sixth and three more runs in the seventh.
These two teams will match up again on Friday, June 9, at 10:30 a.m. with a spot in the championship series on the line.
