Yotes drop opening game at NCAA Baseball Championships

[Box score]

CARY, N.C. - Cal State San Bernardino fell in its opening game of the 2023 NCAA Division II Baseball Championships to the No. 4 seed, Rollins, 7-1, on Saturday, May 24.

After carrying them throughout the season, especially in postseason play, the bats never came alive for the Yotes. They had only one hit through the first six innings and finished with five. Deshawn Johnson had a single and reached base on a walk as he extended his hitting- streak to 21 consecutive games.

Rollins built a 7-0 lead before CSUSB got on the board with a pinch-hit, RBI single by Matt Giesegh in the ninth.

The Tars took the early lead on a solo home run by Jeslyn Whitehead in the first inning. They opened it up with a four-run third inning as Cameron Meehan followed Adams Torres' three-run homer with his own solo home run. Two more runs in the sixth extended the lead to 7-0.

Cal State San Bernardino will be back in action on Monday, June 5, at 10:30 a.m. (PST) when they face the losing team between top-seeded Millersville and No. 8 seed UIndy.
