Cal State San Bernardino wins NCAA Super Regional!

[Box score]

Cal State San Bernardino is heading to the NCAA Division II Baseball Championships for the first time in program history! The Yotes earned a 14-8 over Cal State Monterey Bay to win the NCAA Super Regional in two games and will now head to Cary, N.C.

The game was just 5-4 in the bottom of the sixth when the Yotes scored seven runs with two outs to seize control. Two walks and a hit batter loaded the bases, but after a lineout to shortstop recorded the second out, it looked like CSUSB might come away empty-handed. However, the following four batters all reached base, and Jason Shedlock capped the rally with a run-scoring double to push the lead to 12-3.

As they have done since the start of the CCAA Tournament, the Otters mounted a late rally. They answered the seven runs with two of their own in the seventh and put up three in the top of the ninth, but this deficit was too big to overcome.

Starter Dylan O'Connor (8-5) gave Cal State San Bernardino the performance they needed to capture the regional champion in the first game on Saturday rather than having to go to the 'If Necessary' game. The second team All-CCAA selection went six innings allowing four hits and three runs. He walked five and struck out four. The Yotes got through the next three innings using a combination of John Pfeffer and Andres Quinones to secure the win.

Giovanni Del Negro went 3-for-4 with a home run, four RBI, and two runs scored. His three-run homer in the third turned the game from a 3-2 CSUSB deficit into a 5-3 lead. They never trailed or were tied the rest of the game.

Shedlock had three hits, and Daryl Ruiz reached base four times and scored three runs. The Yotes also benefited from five hit batters and 10 walks. Their only two extra-base hits were Shedlock's double and Del Negro's home run. The other 10 hits were all singles.

CSUSB will travel to North Carolina to play in the NCAA Div. II Championships. More information on game time and opponent to come.
