Yotes take game 1 of the NCAA Super Regional

[Box score]

SEASIDE, Calif. - The first game of the 2023 NCAA Baseball Super Regional went to Cal State San Bernardino, 8-6, over host Cal State Monterey Bay. (May 26)

The Yotes jumped out to a 6-0 after four innings and held on to win the opener in the best-of-3 series.

CSUSB put two runs on the board in the third. After a walk loaded the bases with one out, Jason Shedlock came in to score on a wild pitch, and Giovanni Del Negro drove in another on an RBI groundout.

The Yotes added to their lead with a four-run fourth. Riley Parker doubled in Garrett Macias before scoring on a sac fly by Shedlock. Deshawn Johnson capped the inning with a two-run homer.

Cal State Monterey Bay got one back in their half of the fourth on a solo shot by JJ Engman, but CSUSB immediately answered in the top of the fifth with two more runs on a long ball by Macias to push the lead to 8-1.

As they have done all postseason, the Otters staged a late rally; this time, it came up just a little short. After a run on the fifth, they rallied for three more in the bottom of the sixth to cut the score to 8-5. Chase Lindemann delivered the big hit in the inning with a two-run homer.

CSUMB still trailed by three entering the ninth, but they managed to load the bases with two out. They scored one on a balk, and the last batter worked a full count, but Benny Olguin was able to close the door to earn his second postseason save.

Austyn Coleman started for the Yotes and worked 5.2 innings to earn his 10th win (10-1). He went 5.2 innings allowing 10 hits and five runs. He walked one and struck out four. John Pfeffer pitched to one batter in the fifth after the Otters cut the deficit to three. He then handed it over to Olguin, who went the last three innings, giving up just one hit and one run while striking out six.

Johnson collected three of the nine hits for CSUSB. He finished 3-for-4 with a home run, two RBI, and two runs scored. Macias also crossed the plate twice. Takuto Kataoka was the other Yote to record a multi-hit game.

Nico Hartojo went 3-for-4 with a run scored for the Otters. Leadoff man Chase Lindemann went 2-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored. Nate Rohlicek (8-1) suffered his first loss of the season.

The next NCAA West Super Regional game is scheduled for Saturday, May 27, at Noon. If Cal State Monterey Bay wins, an 'If Necessary' game will be played right after to determine who will represent the West at the NCAA Baseball Championships in Cary, N. C.
