Yotes sweep best-of-3 series over APU; earn a spot in next week's Super Regional

[Box score]

The Cal State San Bernardino baseball team continues to make program history in 2023. After never making the NCAA West Regional, the Yotes won their first three games in the playoffs, including Saturday's 11-2 victory over Azusa Pacific, to earn a trip to the Super Regional.

Deshawn Johnson led the way with two home runs and five runs batted in as the top three hitters in CSUSB's lineup combined to go 9-for-18 with two doubles, three home runs, seven RBI, and nine runs scored. Like Johnson and leadoff man Jason Shedlock, Daryl Ruiz had three hits. He started the scoring with a solo home run in the first and brought Shedlock around for the first of his four runs scored in the third as CSUSB went up 3-0.

Johnson hit his first home run in the fourth to plate three more. After APU scored two in the fifth, CSUSB answered in the bottom of the sixth on a single by Giovanni Del Negro and a sac fly by Danny Garcia to make it 8-2.

A solo home run by Riley Parker in the seventh and a two-run shot by Johnson in the ninth completed the scoring for the Yotes. In its three playoff games, CSUSB scored 29 runs and 40 hits, including seven home runs.

Luke Hempel (8-3) earned the win as the team posted a school-record 41st win. Hempel went six innings allowing nine hits and two runs (one earned). He did not walk a batter, and he struck out four. Benny Olgun pitched the final three innings giving up just one hit for his first save.

The Yotes scored six runs in 3.1 innings off the Cougars' starter Cameron Kessel who took the loss to fall to 2-1.

Cal State San Bernardino will travel to Cal State Monterey Bay for the NCAA West Super Regional starting Friday, May 26.
