Box score]
Cal State Monterey Bay scored four runs in the eighth and five more in the ninth to defeat Cal Poly Pomona 13-12 and earn the right to host next week's NCAA West Super Regional.
The Otters trailed from the fourth inning on. They were down 9-2 after the top of the sixth and went into the eighth down 9-4 before rallying to win their fourth straight home game.
Drew Williams led the charge with a three-hit, six-RBI performance. His eighth-inning home run brought in
Nico Hartojo and
Brady Miguel and narrowed the Broncos' lead to 9-7.
JJ Engman then went back-to-back with Williams to bring CSUMB within one (9-8).
Cal Poly Pomona showed why they are a perennial power in the West Region, answering with three runs in the top of the ninth.
Tyler Chaffee and
Darius Price each brought in runs on fly balls, and
Nick Lugo had an opposite-field single to score one more as CPP went up 12-8.
Despite the added deficit, spirits in the Otters' dugout remained high, and they lifted even more when
Dominic Felice doubled to lead off the inning. After a grounder to first base advanced him to third, he came in the score when
Jacob Dressler singled to the pitcher. That turned the lineup over, and the next six Otters would reach base.
Chase Lindemann walked, and
Brady Miguel followed with a single to load the bases. Hartojo followed with a single to left to score one and bring the batter CSUMB would most like to have at the plate in a clutch situation. The senior second baseman went the other way again, doubling down the left field line to plate Lindemann and Miguel for the game-tying runs.
Cal Poly Pomona then intentionally walked Engman to face
Cole Murchison with the bases loaded. He took a ball and a strike, then watched three straight pitches miss the strike zone as he drew the walk to force in Hartojo as the game-winning run.
This marks the second time in four games CSUMB has overcome a deficit of seven or more runs. It came back from eight runs down last Saturday (May 13) to defeat Cal State San Bernardino in the CCAA Tournament Championship game and overcame a 9-2 disadvantage today.
Cal State Monterey Bay had 18 hits in the game, with Miguel, Hartojo, and Williams all picking up three. Lindemann reached base four times with two hits and two walks. He also scored three times, as did Hartojo.
Cal Poly Pomona hit a season-high five home runs.
Darius Price went deep twice, which included giving CPP a 6-2 lead with a two-run homer in the six. He finished with four RBI.
Marco Malerba had a home run and scored three times.
Johnny Pappas and Lugo each had two RBI and scored two runs.
The Otters will host Cal State San Bernardino in a best-of-3 NCAA Super Regional starting on Friday, May 26.
