CSUSB baseball earns first NCAA playoff win in program history

[Box score]

Cal State San Bernardino baseball earned the program's first NCAA postseason victory with an 8-7 win over Western Oregon in the NCAA West Regional.

The win did not come easy, as Western Oregon came to play on the road, scoring in each of the first four innings. The Wolves got on the board with a run in the first before Giovanni Del Negro and Danny Garcia answered with back-to-back home runs in the bottom of the first to make it 3-1.

WOU would rally for two runs in the top of the third to go in front 4-3, but again CSUSB answered, this time on a two-run homer by Deshawn Johnson, to reclaim the lead at 5-4. Another run by Western Oregon in the fourth would knot the game back up at 5-5.

Del Negro and Garcia teamed up again in the fifth to give CSUSB a lead it would never relinquish. Del Negro drove in Jason Shedlock on an RBI groundout, and Garcia doubled in Johnson one batter later to make it 7-5.

The Yotes added another insurance run in the eighth, and it proved critical as the Wolves rallied for two runs in the top of the ninth, and the tying run was stranded on base as the last out was recorded on a groundout to shortstop.

Austyn Coleman started the game and earned the historic win to improve to 9-1. He went six innings allowing 12 hits and five runs. He struck out two and did not walk a batter. Oscar Rauda gave up two runs in the ninth but still earned his 13th save of the season.

The top five hitters in the Yotes lineup combined to go 8-for-19 with a double, three home runs, seven RBI, and eight runs scored. Garcia went 2-for-4 with a double, a home run, and two RBI. Del Negro knocked in three runs and scored twice. Johnson added to his league lead with two more runs as he went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI. He has now scored 72 runs on the season.

CSUSB defeated the GNAC Pitcher of the Year, Dylan Chambers. He was charged with his first loss of the season after allowing seven runs and nine hits in six innings.

Cal State San Bernardino will now play a best-of-three series against Azusa Pacific beginning on Friday, May 19, at 3 p.m.
