SEASIDE, Calif. - Coming off a stellar, complete-game effort last week at the CCAA tournament, Cal Poly Pomona's
Noel Soto delivered again on that field to lead the Broncos to a 5-4 win over Point Loma in its first game of the NCAA West Regional.
Soto went six innings allowing seven hits and three runs. He walked two and struck out two. All three runs scored on home runs in the third and fourth inning as he kept the game close. He left the game trailing 3-2.
The Broncos tied the game in the eighth after
Nin Burns II tripled with one out and came home to score on a single by Marco Malerba.
After another scoreless inning by
Scott Armstrong, CPP took its first lead since Burns II solo home run in the first. With one out,
Nick Lugo singled, and
Cedrick Perez singled to put two on for leadoff man
Brent Cota. He took the first pitch, then dumped a soft liner into left field to score the go-ahead run.
Johnny Pappas plated another insurance run one batter later when he dropped the ball in front of the centerfielder.
The two-run lead would be chopped in half two batters into the ninth when Scott Anderson homered to left-center. However, this would be the only blemish on Armstrong's line as he got the next two batters in order to close out the game and earn the win. He went three innings allowing three hits and one run to improve to 4-1.
Cal Poly Pomona will play Cal State Monterey Bay in a best-of-three series to determine who will go to the NCAA Super Regional.
