SEASIDE - No. 1 seed Cal State Monterey Bay is advancing to the semifinal game of the CCAA Baseball Tournament with a 9-3 victory over Stanislaus State.
Eight of the nine starters for the Otters recorded hits, and seven scored a run.
Drew Williams led the way going 3-for-5 with a double, three RBI, and two runs scored. He drove in the first run of the game and scored in the first inning as Cal State Monterey Bay took a 2-1 lead.
A solo home run by Stanislaus State's
Robert Valdivia in the third tied the game back up at 2-2. It stayed tied into the fifth when Williams again came through with a run-scoring hit. The first team All-CCAA second baseman stepped to the plate with no outs and runners at second and third. He laced a double to right-center field to bring in both runs and give CSUMB a lead it would never relinquish.
Stanislaus State would cut the deficit to one (4-3) on a solo home run by
Alex Solis in the sixth, and coach
Walt White then turned to
Colby Harrison out of the bullpen. He set the tone for the bullpen which did not allow a run in four innings of work. Harrison allowed only one hit over the next two innings while striking out three.
The Otters answered the Warriors' sixth-inning score and put the game away with a five-run seventh. The first five batters of the seventh all reached base and came around to score. Center fielder
Kyle Guerra provided the big hit of the inning with a two-RBI single and capped off the scoring when he crossed the plate on
Chase Lindemann's sac fly.
Mitchell Torres earned the win and improved to 6-1 for Cal State Monterey Bay. The left-hander went the first five innings allowing four hits and three runs.
Cal State Monterey Bay will advance to the semifinal game on Friday, May 12. They will face the winner of Cal State San Bernardino and Cal Poly Pomona. First pitch is scheduled for Noon.
